- Warrnambool Carnival, Day 1 Preview: 30 April 2019
Track: Good 4
Rail: +3m entire
Weather: Mostly fine
We’ll be racing on a Good surface for the 10-event card at Eagle Farm this Saturday, with only a minor chance of light showers through the week. Expecting a fair track for all.
Speed map/race shape: Five debutants in the 2yo colts and geldings race to start the day. Expecting the first three on the race card to press on in Conquering Judas, Embattled and Well Prepared.
Advantaged runners: WELL PREPARED showed speed to lead at both starts in his first prep – he won on debut then couldn’t keep it up behind The Odyssey in the Listed Phelan Ready. Expect him to be hard to catch but a couple of the debutants look to have leading hopes in GETYOURGREYON and READY TO HUMBLE, both have caught the eye in recent trials. So too has SCOUT, who chased home Well Prepared at his only race start. Can’t rule out CONQUERING JUDAS off his dominant last start win, but back to 1000m a slight query.
Speed map/race shape: Race 2 is the fillies division for the two-year-olds and there’s eight of 16 on debut. The wide draw for Epaumada should ensure she and Written With Ease push on to the front, giving Button Pusher, Bold Eos and Longbottom the chance to settle handily.
Advantaged runners: No surprise the only multiple race winner EPAUMADA has come up as favourite, she’s unbeaten in two starts and scored comfortable in a recent trial. She appears as though Gollan has successfully schooled her as a professional racer. BOLD EOS backs up after chasing home Gem Of Scotland last start, that form then ties in with BUTTON PUSHER who did the same in a different race at her last start. Interesting to see two raiders from NSW in LONGBOTTOM and BRAZEN GEM who ran the quinella in a handy Muswellbrook feature. They’re a market watch back to drier ground for the first time.
Speed map/race shape: High Wind and Remarkable Son have drawn at opposite ends of the stalls but look the only leaders in a staying race without a great deal of natural pace.
Advantaged runners: At time of writing it is $5.50 the field. Going with the filly WINNING WAYS who has shown herself to possess a real motor and staying potential, despite never being tested beyond 1800m. She crushed a Class 4 field last start. In similar grade WU GOK was given a lazy ride when second last time out, the start prior he just reeled in FIGHTING TEO who gets a weight swing on the Waller runner. HIGH OPINION stays in Brisbane for another go and this event is slightly easier. SIR BARNABUS, ALLCASH and SEENTO come out of a race that might be a rung below the others.
Speed map/race shape: The low draws dominate the early speed, with Dream Kisses (3) likely looking to punch through and take it up from Mail Escort (2) and Vienna Moon (4). It should be a spirited early section and give a few closers their chance if good enough.
Advantaged runners: The colt SPIN would appreciate the front runners softening each other up. He couldn’t get clear running until late last time but this is a big drop in grade and he brings the best form. He’ll probably concede a couple of lengths head start to STAR BOY who raced on speed in a high pressure Country Qualifier first up. He’s well suited here and has plenty of improvement to come. MAIL ESCORT and NEW HORIZONS finished alongside each other at their last outing, a race in which TOTALLY CHARMED had no luck. All have hopes here, but happy to spec that DREAM KISSES isn’t as well suited as her last start win.
Speed map/race shape: anticipating a strong gallop here courtesy of Masterati and Suliven crossing from the deep and finding the front from Pizonie and Wooshka. There’s a few of these who typically race handy who may end up midfield and beyond.
Advantaged runners: Looking down the bottom towards a couple of handy three-year-olds. PIZONIE is overdue for another win but he’s run second at both runs this prep to horses who have won again. A strong 1200m is a slight concern if they clap the pace on, which may play into HOLD THE LINE’S hands. He’s twice a winner at this distance fresh and can find a nice trailing position in the run. The inside draw is actually a minor concern for RIVER RACER here in our eyes if she gets buried on the paint. SUNDABANS’ first Queensland start was full of merit but as of Thursday there was no jockey confirmed and she may be coming out.
Speed map/race shape: Key hope Racecourse Road could lead the field of three-year-olds over 1400m in company with I Dream Of Green. Don’t be surprised to see Soxagon push forward like he did last time either. Average tempo expected.
Advantaged runners: An aggressive ride from Nothdurft can give SOXAGON every hope of returning to the winner’s circle. He sat outside the speed, kicked clear and was only run down by the superb Millard Reaction late – that horse is a live chance at Randwick today. The extra run gives him the fitness edge over RACECOURSE ROAD who has returned in good form but is completely unknown at the trip. DEFENCE MISSILE is also a distance query but has spent his prep chasing home Mishani Hustler and Rock Beat so the form is good and he should get a cosy smother throughout. Look for A MAN TO MATCH and TRUSTY LAD flying home with an eye to racing over further.
Speed map/race shape: Trommelschlagen should lead them over the mile at his own leisure. Lota Creek Gold and Kilmacurragh could also assume handy roles.
Advantaged runners: Expecting a sharp improvement from BRAINS back up to this trip. He didn’t have much luck leaving the gates at Doomben and was left flat footed when the sprint went on. He may land ahead of some key rivals here including LE JUGE who is racing in top form. He beat home MAZAZ and TROMMELSCHLAGEN last time – the latter got caught in a battle he wasn’t going to win last time a long way from home and can bounce back. GOLD AMBITION was a similar story in the same race to Brains, although that’s his usual pattern. Regardless, he needs this 1600m at least. There’s a handful of other hopes but you can’t have them all (but putting HIGH DEGREE on top of that pile anyway)!
Speed map/race shape: It should be on for young and old over the 1000m. Fiery Heights, From Within and the emergency Whycatchim are the speediest and will set the tone here.
Advantaged runners: He’s sat on the speed twice and won this prep, but back to 1000m COOL SEQUENCE should enjoy taking the sit from barrier one here. It looks a good spot to be and will give him a head start on closers like the first up BELFLYER, GUARD OF HONOUR and even HAVASAY first up at odds. They’ll have to get past the on-pacers though who have some real speed. FROM WITHIN is racing in great heart and picked herself up off the canvas last start, FIERY HEIGHTS was just three lengths off a Group 1 place getter in Sydney recently and WHYCATCHIM is speedy but this is a big step up.
Speed map/race shape: Zahspeed has drawn wide but that won’t stop him looking for the front, leaving Courtza King and Tonsor to take the trail. With A Promise and Scallopini will be close up too and expecting this will be an on-pace dominated affair.
Advantaged runners: Well we declared TONSOR last time to Racepal members and in the previews and he didn’t let us down, putting a gap in them. Love what Matthew Smith is doing with this bloke and from a good draw again he gets the ideal run. The only real challenger looks to be SCALLOPINI and he has great credentials too, bouncing to 1400m off a win and second at 1200m. He can settle handy enough and fight it out with the favourite. Horses like CANNYESCENT, SHOGUN SUN and THE CHAIRMAN will enjoy the switch to Eagle Farm and can run into the placings.
Speed map/race shape: We end a mammoth day with a 1400m event for non metro winners and there’s a big field declared. Constant Flight can show early muster while his main challengers look to be the emergencies in Suliven, Fanx and Shauqin. Regardless, tempo on.
Advantaged runners: With the pressure on, HAPPY HOOVES can again be a major player. He’s drawn awkwardly but ultimately would have been looking for cover anyway, he ideally would end up in the three wide line. It is a similar story for I AM IMPINGE, who will appreciate Eagle Farm. That gives them the edge over CALZINI who will could get shuffled back from barrier 3, but races as though 1400m will suit him. CONSTANT FLIGHT will be hard to run down with the 1600m grounding under his belt, while with luck early SURPRISE BULLET can also perform well up on the speed.
